The work on the first edition of the Brundibár children's book (in German) is nearing its end and I am confident that our scheduled publication date will be met: September 23, 2023.
We also hope that the Ukrainian edition
can appear at the same time. We strive to make this happen as we are keen to present both editions to the public with an event on or around 23 September 2023.
The German edition is made possible thanks to the cooperation of Edition Room 28
with the music publisher Boosey & Hawkes - Bote & Bock
(owner of the material and performance rights to the children's opera Brundibár). The Ukrainian edition is a publication of Edition Room 28
with auhorization from Boosey & Hawkes. Both editions (the German and the Ukrainian) are supported by the NPO Room 28. The hope behind is that this book opens up new fields of activities for both sides - Edition Room 28
and the NPO Room 28. Therefore, I am excited to see what ideas and new possibilities will arise from it.
As for the Ukrainian version: I am happy that the production can be realized thanks to the support of the German Foreign Office.
This means that we can give books as a gift to Ukrainian children. In what way this will happen, is still open. Of course, we have ideas. But now it depends also on those who like our project and support it - financially or in the form of a cooperation.
We need a location and co-organizers for this
Release Event, to which we will invite the opera stage-director
Mstislav Pentkovsky
from Riga. He gave the idea to the Ukrainian children's book project. We will also invite the translator of the book
Galina Palaguta
from Charkiv, now Warsaw. In order to organize this evcent we plan a preliminary workshop with all involved in Berlin.
The Ukrainian edition of the Brundibár children’s book will part of the publications of
Edition Room 28. I am truely happy about this, for various reasons: a)
Brundibár
is part of the story of “The Girls of Room 28”; - b) I met survivors of this group of girls who once lived together in Room 28 in the Girls Home L410 in the Theresienstadt ghetto during my research in 1996-1997 for a radio-documentary about
Brundibár; - c) my text for the children's book roots in those years when I already tried to find a publisher for this book project, a plan that was then thwarted by others.
